2nd May: Red-crested Pochards

The 2nd viewing platform at Ham Wall RSPB produced the goods again today with a pair of Red-crested Pochard spending most of the day there. The drake in particular is a stunning looking duck, with its plasticine-like red bill and glowing bronze crown. These are the first Red-crested Pochards i've seen on the Avalon Marshes, and demonstrate yet again how this amazing piece of quality habitat is luring all sorts of birds in.

Over on Noah's was my first Common Tern of the year (not often I see Whiskered, Black and Arctic before Common!), and a few Whimbrel flew over nice and low.

Common Tern- the flight action of this bird seemed so slow
and lumbering after the grace of the Arctics
