The last few days have seen a massive arrival of Swifts on the Avalon Marshes, with well over 1000 frequently being visible at any time. They have mainly been feeding really high up, but strong winds today seemed to have the effect of forcing them down low. Hoping to get some photographs I managed to find a spot on the edge of one of lakes where they were flying into the wind, thus slowing down slightly from their usual break-neck speeds. They were still zooming along at a hell of a rate and it was a real challenge even getting the birds in the frame, but i'm quite happy with these shots:
The strong westerlies also bought in a few Arctic Terns to Shapwick Heath NNR; 6 over Noah's and 1 at Canada Lake.
