5th May: First Damselfy

From now on, i'll be using this website to list all interesting sightings from the Avalon Marshes. As well as my own sightings, i'll include records from other people that i've heard of, either passed to me in the field or gleaned from information sources (SOS message board, RBA, twitter etc.)
I would also like to include photos from the area from other photographers. If you have photographs that you would like to share with a wider audience, send them to me at joe@avalonwildlife.co.uk for consideration. I will of course credit them to you and provide links to websites if you have one.

Also: 1 Wood Warbler reported 100yds beyond 2nd viewing platform

I saw my first damselfly of the year today (a female that was either Common Blue, Azure or Variable!) that was down in the grass in front of the 2nd viewing platform at Ham Wall RSPB. Hopefully now that the weather is consistently warm we'll start to see an emergence of damselflies and dragonflies. The Avalon Marshes are one of the best sites in the country to see these awesome little creatures, and in early summer when they're out in full numbers, they almost even outshine the birdlife! It's still early in the season but we should be seeing Large Red Damselfly any day now and Hairy Dragonfly will be coming out in the next week or two.

Also at Ham Wall, the Pied-billed Grebe was still singing and the drake Ring-necked Duck showed well.

  1. The teneral damselfly is probably a female Variable Damselfly. Teneral Damselflies basically look like dull versions of the adults, so the patterning will be the same. The mercury mark on segment 2 is more common on Variable than Azure. This individual will be a blue form female.
